Pie O My,
The Sopranos’un izlediğim en güzel bölümü değil. Ama alttaki fotoğrafta yer
alan finaliyle, aklıma kazınanlardan biri. Sembolik motiflerle kuvvetlendirilen, hatta katmanlaşan dizinin benzersiz
hikâye anlatımı, her sahnede karşılaşılabilecek zengin detaylarla dolu. Ben de
bugün, dizide özellikle hayvanlarla kurulan sembolik ilişkiyi anlamak için,
Christopher Vincent’ın yazdığı “Paying Respect To The Sopranos” isimli kitaptan
Airplane’in 1967 tarihli SURREALISTIC
Pillow albümünde yer alan White RABBIT
ile başlayıp biten ve benim en sevdiğim bölüm olan ilk sezonun yedinci bölümü
ile yan yana geldiğinde, en azından benim için, başka çağrışımlara izin veriyor:
“Duck: Tony’s
first panic attack occurs when he sees the baby ducks take flight for the first
time. He later dreams of duck flying off with his penis, a castration, and in
dialoging with Melfi about this dream he comes to the realization that his
anxiety about the ducks’ departure is actually derived from his fear of losing
his family. This explanation concretely establishes the device of symbolism in
the firmament of The Sopranos. This primary interpretation of ducks provides a
foundation for numerous additional instances of duck details. In the moment
after Tony kills Febby Petrullio, his attention is caught by a flock of ducks
flying overhead, their calls echoing in the New England woods. In season two,
Melfi recalls the ducks with a smile, pointing out that Tony imparting
difficult lessons to his children is like teaching them to fly, allowing them
to leave the nest. In assessing Livia as a mother, Carmela describes her as a 'peculiar duck.' Tony’s lawyer helps him by getting their 'duck in a row.' Tony
hides money in bushels of duck food. Junior feels sorry for a neighborhood boy
because his shoes are held together by duct tape, pronounced “duck” tape.
Rat: Some
animal plays a smaller role. Rats are a constant point of reference when
discussing betrayal of loyalty. The common term for anyone who cooperates with
the Federal government is 'rat.' When someone spills someone else’s secret,
they are said to be 'ratting out' that person.
Dog: Tony is
sentimental about his childhood dog Trippy. Chris accidently sits on Adriana’s
beloved Cosette with fatal results. Angie Bonpensiero seeks money from the
Sopranos to pay for her sick dog’s veterinary bills. Melfi has a dream in which
Tony is represented by a Rottweiler.
Horse: Tony’s
love of animals shines on Pie o My. He shows genuine, childlike affection in
caring for Pie and remembers her as a beautiful and innocent creature. In his
world of theft, murder, vice and general ugliness, Pie O My is a rare thing of
grace, untainted by the dreadfulness with which Tony lives. There are moments
when Pie O My is drawn in close proximity to women in Tony’s life. In a dream,
Carmela tells Tony he can’t have his horse/whores in the house. As Tony breaks
up with Valentina and Svetlana he gives each the gift of o diamond brooch in
the shape of horseshoe. Furio’s defining trait is his ponytail.
Fish: Tony and
Carmela frequent a new, trendy sushi restaurant at the beginning of season six.
Carmela characterizes AJ’s English teacher as a cold fish. As Chris relapses
into heroin use, Tim Buckley’s song 'Dolphins' is prominently featured. After
Adriana’s murder, Carmela counsels a grieving Christopher that there are other
fish in the sea. Melfi’s Alexithymia discussion paints Tony as a shark.
Pig: Individuals
who are greedy, crass or selfish are referred to as pigs. Of course there is
the centrality of the pork store: Satriale’s.
Bear: Bears
take on significance in the fifth season when a wild black bear stalks the
Soprano estate. A stuffed animal bear is present in Tony’s coma experience,
delivering the message that his elevator is out of order.”
